Dogs have been slaughtered in painful ways and processed to be served on someone’s table, while fruitless debates have not taken us anywhere remarkable for the last 5 decades. Out of many pointless arguments, the sophist rhetoric of “edible dog” has been invented in order to justify eating dogs (Canis lupus familiaris). However, the history of intimate ties between humans and dogs has been emphasized more than ever, especially in light of social change. Now more and more people have come to understand dogs as animal companions. They also are beginning to understand the horrible conditions endured by dogs meant to be served as food. These dogs consume garbage and live in cages, ultimately to be cruelly slaughtered and served as meat. It is the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and the Ministry of Environment that have enabled Korea as the one and only country in the world with factory farms of ‘edible dogs’! It is the workers in the industry who have made money from conducting animal abuse. We must move forward effectively and immediately to end the dog meat trade. We must do so before Korea gains the ill reputation of being the only country left with the dog meat industry in the whole world.
