End the Dog Meat Trade!

Appropriating Bigkinds, a newspaper article analysis system founded and operated by the Korea Press Foundation, KARA searched news containing keywords of ‘eating dog’ or ‘dog meat’ and arranged relevant search results in a social network diagram. Among search results, the top 100 relevant news—sorted according to accuracy—were placed to indicate the connective relationships among keywords. The network diagram shows what kinds of social issues were more prominent in each period.

 1999-2007  Standing up against continuous attempt of dog meat legalization

When searching with the keywords ‘dog meat’ from 1999 to 2007, we found 2481 news items and we could extract 26 keywords out of the result. ‘World Cup’ marked the most recurring keyword in this period, which shows that the arguments for and against dog meat were the most heated and frequently uttered during the World Cup. KARA found news featuring AN Yong-geun, professor of Chungcheong University and ‘the world’s first expert on dog meat.‘ There are lots of other news articles on dog meat, including how to cook dog meat and reviews of famous Boshintang restaurants. There are other recurring names identified in the search result, such as Brigitte Bardot, the actress who consistently raises awareness of dog-eating practices, and Lawmaker KIM Hong-shing, who proposed a revision of the Processing of Livestock Products Act to legalize the dog meat trade.

Here are the search results found with the word ‘dog meat’ from 2008 to 2014. A total of 63 news articles were found. When sorted according to keywords, the relevant map shows that animal-related laws and regulations stands out: Animal Protection Act, Act on the Prohibition of Dog Meat Trade, Act on the Prevention of Contagious Animal Diseases, Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act, Livestock Industry Act, etc. It is also confirmed that many celebrities who are against the dog meat trade—cartoonists, singers, dancers, photographers, etc.—gathered to conduct various performances and activities.

 2015-2020  We’ve reached social consensus already. Now is the time to end the dog meat trade!  

Here are the search results found with the word ‘dog meat’ from 2015 to 2020. A total of 383 news articles were found. When sorted according to keywords, the relevant map extracted 27 news articles. During the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the issues and conflicts regarding dog meat trade were ignited again. However, we can see that the voice of citizens who demanded the ending of the dog meat trade was heard louder than ever. A news article explains that the civil complaint to ‘oppose the slaughter and intake of companion animals’ attracted the largest number of petitions during the first year of President MOON’s regime. The legislation-related discussions on the prohibition of dog meat trade took off from the year 2017 on. KARA announced the fieldwork findings on the circumstances of illegal animal feeding with food waste occurring on Korean dog farms, and brought forward the need to revise the Wastes Control Act. Lawmaker Han Jeong-ae proposed a revision of the Livestock Industry Act. In 2018, Lawmaker LEE Sang-don proposed a revision of Livestock Industry Act that excludes dogs from the category of livestock, and Lawmaker PYO Chang-won proposed that the Animal Protection Act prohibit arbitrary killing of companion animals. It seems clear that lots of news articles dealt with revisions of legislation regarding the dog meat trade during this period.
